As the day of the wedding of the century dawned, Prime Minister John Key and his wife Bronagh woke at 5am to get ready for Wills and Kate’s big day.
And they aren’t the only members of the Key clan who will have a good spot for the big day – Mr Key’s London-based sister is camped outside Westminster Abbey.
Mrs Key said it took her “a long time” to put together her wedding outfit. She showed off the stunning pale pink and navy Trelise Cooper creation for the first time before they left for the service.
The elegant two-tone lace dress was matched with a long silk coat and completed with a navy hat and kitten-heeled matching shoes, pink gloves and some pearls. Her make-up was flawless, with smoky eyes and glossy pink lips.
Mr Key wore a smartly pressed merino wool suit, with a pink tie to complement his wife’s look.
In her patent pink clutch Mrs Key had a comb, some lip gloss and all-important tissues, in case she sheds a few happy tears.
”I feel really fortunate – it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to go to something this special,” Mrs Key said.
”I’m looking forward to it.”
”We’ve been up since five in the morning,” Mr Key said.
”I think it will be a great day of pageantry, pomp and ceremony – and also romance,” he added. ”They are a young couple. We don’t know Kate but we know William and he’s a fine young man.
”It’s an important day for the Royal Family and for Britain. You can just see by the excitement on the ground in London what a special day it’s going to be.”
Mrs Key couldn’t predict what Kate’s dress will look like: ”I think she’ll look beautiful whatever she wears.”
The glammed-up couple were due to wait at a hotel before being bussed through the crowds of up to one million lining London’s streets.
They had to be in their seats – just a few yards from the altar in Poet’s Corner – more than an hour before the bride arrives.
After the the nuptials, the Keys are among 600 of the 1900 guests invited to a Buckingham Palace reception.
”The Queen said to me there are three rooms and she’ll be going through those rooms,” Mr Key said. Prince Charles will make a speech.
”William and Kate will come around and obviously we’ll have a chance to wish them well, hopefully. Then the royal couple leave about 3.30pm.
